American Mavericks Festival: What's Ahead

The American Mavericks Festival is about to get underway, bringing new music performances and related events to San Francisco, Chicago, Ann Arbor, and New York throughout the month of March. A schedule of events can be found here. (Please note that all of the “Neighborhood Concerts” taking place in New York are free.)

WQXR’s Q2 Music will present a full schedule of related programming, detailed at the link above. Highlights will include live webcasts and recordings of events taking place in New York — including performances by Jennifer Koh, Alarm Will Sound, JACK Quartet with Steve Mackey, and Dan Deacon with NOW Ensemble and Calder Quartet — and Composers in Their Own Words, a series of introductions from Steve Reich, Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, David Lang, Judd Greenstein, Tyondai Braxton, Timothy Andres, and many more.

In addition, Q2 Music will broadcast a playlist by a different new musician every day at 2:00 p.m. EST:

The feature presents playlists from renowned artists both within and outside the world of “classical” music. Each day, a new musician will curate an hour’s worth of his or her favorite maverick composers’ music. Featured artists include David Byrne, composer and founding member of the Talking Heads; Brooklyn-based quartet So Percussion; Canadian cellist ZoĆ« Keating; Alarm Will Sound and Brooklyn Philharmonic conductor Alan Pierson; plus Jherek Bischoff, Tyondai Braxton, Dave Douglas, Sam Hillmer, Son Lux, Padma Newsome, Owen Pallett, Richard Reed Parry, Alex Somers, Shara Worden, The National’s Bryce Dessner and many more.

Much of this programming will be archived on the Q2 Music website for on-demand listening.

Indie_Classical

"But the biggest distinguishing mark of the indie-classical scene is its lack of distinguishing marks. This is music that does not have to argue for its very right to exist, which means it's free to drift into dreamy cul-de-sacs, to explore drift and texture, to smear the borders of form."

-Jayson Greene (Pitchfork)
